NOTICE TO UNIVERSITY STUDENTS AND EMPLOYEES

INFORMATION REGARDING SEASONAL FLU INCLUDING H1N1

UPDATE - January 31, 2011, 3:00 pm
January and February are peak times for seasonal flu diagnoses, according to the Center for Disease Control. Are you protected?

The first and most important step in preventing flu viruses is getting a yearly flu vaccine, according to Joey Pons, director of environmental health and safety at UL Lafayette. This year’s seasonal flu vaccine also offers protection against the H1N1 virus.

“Did you also know that symptoms for the flu and meningitis can be similar? However, if you have flu-like symptoms including severe headache, trouble looking at light and neck stiffness, then you should see your doctor immediately as these symptoms can be associated with meningitis,” he said. “It is best to be vaccinated for both.”

The CDC recommends everyone 6 months of age and older get vaccinated against the flu. The vaccine is especially important for individuals considered high risk including young children, pregnant women, people with chronic health conditions like asthma, diabetes or heart and lung disease and people 65 years and older.

Students entering UL Lafayette are required to provide proof of immunizations including one for meningitis. Some exemptions may apply for students opting not to take the vaccine, however opting out leaves students exposed to this potential deadly condition.

Pons said the Safety Department’s webpage on the university’s website has useful information about the flu and meningitis. “The information on vaccines for seasonal flu and meningitis have been updated and everyone should take time to review it, ” he said.
